Why Strength Training for Dancers is Important
Are you looking for ways to improve your technique, strength, and artistry outside the studio? Many dancers feel that they can get everything they need from their weekly classes. But sometimes, working hard during class isn’t enough. Strength training may be what you’re missing to level up your child’s dancing. Thankfully,
Moss Performing Arts Academy can help your child improve their strength and performance all at the same time.

What is Strength Training?
Strength training is a type of exercise focused on building muscle. It’s usually completed outside
regular dance classes, although some instructors incorporate short strength training exercises into
technique classes. Strength training builds on dance fundamentals to target the muscles required for specific steps.
For example, a dancer hoping to leap higher may focus on their hamstrings with Pilates movements, their thighs with slow squats, and their ankle strength with resistance band training. Paying attention to the particular muscles used in a leap, like those in the legs and ankles, will help the dancer build strength in a way that directly improves their work.
Strength Training Exercises
Strength training exercises do not need to be completed in a gym. In fact, many young dancers incorporate their repetitions into their home lives! Just like stretching, simple movements can be done within a small space. Students should ask their instructors what to focus on at home. Always be careful when completing strength training without professional supervision! We encourage beginners to participate in our unique stage fitness class to gain experience.
Strength Training Program
At Moss Performing Arts Academy, we encourage a well-rounded arts education. This mission includes overall physical health. Our staff understands that weekly technique classes can’t always prepare students for the athleticism that performing requires. That’s why we developed Stage Fit, a unique curriculum focused on creating strong bodies to support our dancers through long careers.
Theater students can improve their breath support through cardio conditioning. A National Strength and Conditioning Association-certified instructor leads students through targeted strength training exercises during each class. With expert guidance, young performers can enhance their skills and progress faster in regular classes!
Benefits of Strength Training for Dancers
In addition to promoting well-rounded physical health, strength training exercises can benefit dancers in many ways, including:
- Improved posture
- Increased stamina and endurance
- Heightened stability during challenging steps
- Lengthened flexibility and the strength to support flexible muscles
- Lower risk of injury
- Increased confidence in and out of the studio
- Clearer somatic, or bodily, awareness, which can help dancers make small adjustments to their technique
Dancers who integrate strength training into their routines discover stronger bodies, inside and out. Could strength training be what your dance education is missing?
